The Diagnostic Singnificance of the Cystometry in the Patients with Low Back Painand Sciatica

Abstract
The author had studied preoperative bladder function using the water cystometry from Jan. 1974 to Apr_ 1975 in the 43 cases of the lumbar disc herniation.
The results obtained were as follows:
1 Among the 43 cases, 34 cases were male and 9 cases were female. The third decades were the most predominating age group. The abnormal bladder function was revealed in the 36 cases(83.72%).
2. The disc herniation site was L4-5 in 32 cases(74.42%) and L5-S1 in 11 cases(25. 58%). The abnormal bladder function was revealed more frequently in the cases of L5-S1 disc herniation.
3. The abnormal bladder function was appeared more frequently in the patients with positive straight leg raising test(81.82%).
4. By the myelographic findings, the abnormal bladder function was revealed in 89.96% of patients with .partial filling defect and 80% of patients with complete or nearly complete blocking.
5. The abnormal bladder function had no relationship to the residual urine. Only 7 cases with no residual urine revealed normal bladder function.
6. The abnormal bladder function may be caused by the compression and traction of the nerve root in the patients with low back pain and sciatica, and the compression or irritation of the cauda equines may also be the cause of abnormal bladder function.
7. According to the above results, the cystometry is an important adjunct in the evaluation of the cases with low back pain and sciatica.
